[00:00:00] Welcome to "You Can't Make This Up," a companion podcast from Netflix.

[00:00:07] I'm Ashley Olman your host for this week's episode. Every other week we discuss a different Netflix series or film with special guests and all the stories are surprisingly true. This week we're revisiting the hit docu series American Vandal in anticipation of the second season which just launched. Journalist Lauren Lopez will be speaking with documentary wonder kids Peter Maldonado and Sam Ecklund.

[00:00:31] If you've seen the first season but need a quick recap. Season 1 follows the events of a massive phallic vandalism at Hanover High in Oceanside California. The school wrongly accused and expelled senior Dillon Maxwell. But sophomores Peter and Sam got out their cameras to document the case and ultimately bring about justice for Dylan. In Season 2 Peter and Sam tackle a new school and a new vandal, The Turd Burglar. And you know what? Lauren, Sam & Peter can tell you more about it. Let's get to the interview.

[00:01:03] Hi everyone. I'm Lauren Lopez and I am so excited to be joining the creators of the strangely addictive totally captivating Netflix docu drama, American Vandal. You guys, thank you so much for joining me. I'm a huge fan.

[00:01:19] Thank you for having us.

[00:01:20] Yeah, Thanks.

[00:01:20] So like everyone else in the world I was completely blown away by American Vandal. I was like oh the whole show about penises, ok. Like that will be funny for five minutes but it actually was so so captivating. I get totally sucked in by the story and the true mystery of it.

[00:01:37] A lot of people felt that way. A lot of people were like thinking that it's a show about dicks, but it's not a show about dicks. It's about justice. And you know exposing that so.

[00:01:47] Right.

[00:01:47] Yeah we found that once people actually got into the show they realized how captivating and intricate the crime was. And I think it sort of sparked from there.

[00:01:55] Totally.

[00:01:56] Speaks to a lot of people,.

[00:01:56] Totally. And I think it really spoke to everyone. So I want to say congratulations on the success of everything I mean going from this high school documentary to a huge Netflix hit. How does it feel to be so successful at such a young age. I mean you're basically the Sarah Canigs of Netflix.

[00:02:13] It's pretty great.

[00:02:15] Yes.

[00:02:15] Sorry that shook me for a second. I love Sarah Canig.

[00:02:17] Yeah.

[00:02:18] Yeah. You know it's all so surreal and really humbling and yeah it's been a crazy crazy ride. We did not expect this. We didn't even set out to be documentarians. We have been making movies for a long time since we were like What. Like since middle school probably. Yeah. And then the Dylan story. Was weird I was like we were at the right place at the right time. And it's a story that we...type of story that we also like telling: a story about injustice and all this stuff. So we felt like we could use our techniques and our tools to maybe help you know make some change.

[00:02:53] That was really cool because it just sort of fell into our laps. It was happening right at our school where we were and we were already you know in the process of filmmaking and you know we thought would this be a really interesting challenge.

[00:03:04] Yeah I mean how lucky for you that you know 27 decks were drawn while you just happened to be there working on...

[00:03:10] It was like a dream come true.

[00:03:11] Yeah it's really it's really for anyone. So Season 1 ended a little ambiguous.

[00:03:17] Did it?

[00:03:17] Yeah I think we gave a pretty pretty strong suggestion as to who we think did it. You mean Krista Carlisle, or...

[00:03:26] Well here's the thing about that. I don't know if we could say it but we shouldn't because we know better than the school board if we were to do that. You know one of the bigger ideas and topics of our of our docu series is that we're examining the justice system and the US and everyone in this in this country has a right to have a fair trial and is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty but.

[00:03:52] It doesn't always play out that way.

[00:03:53] Exactly. It doesn't always play out that way. And we saw that so clearly with Dylan Maxwell that he was guilty until proven innocent and he wasn't given a fair trial.

[00:04:03] They just you know they made they convicted him on his reputation alone. So. So we would be no better than the school board if we were to make similar accusations about someone else although we feel more than strongly confident that it is who we think it is.

[00:04:20] Krista Carlisle? So she she did it? I'll take that as an affirmative.

[00:04:25] Yes.

[00:04:25] Yes. There we go. OK.

[00:04:26] I mean no.

[00:04:29] Hmm ok. She looked pretty guilty to me. But we'll move on.

[00:04:34] You know as much as people loved this docu series you also came under a little bit of heat. You know people thought this story was exploitative of Dylan and your classmates. How do you react to that kind of negative feedback.

[00:04:49] Peter you want to take this one. I feel like you'll handle handle it better than I do.

[00:04:52] It's hard as documentarians to you know to ride that fine line between you know exposing you know things about certain people and you know and because we are we even experienced it ourselves we turn the cameras on ourselves and yeah we investigated eachother.

[00:05:06] We try to make it as fair as possible.

[00:05:07] Right.

[00:05:07] I mean we did you know go into each other's personal lives and expose certain things that I wish you hadn't have done, Peter.

[00:05:14] Yeah but it was a good learning lesson.

[00:05:15] It was, and I'm over it. Ok?

[00:05:18] But it was a good learning lesson for us because it taught us you know and it showed us exactly what we were putting our subjects through how much we really are exposing people's secrets and how delicate we have to be with that. And yeah it's a hard line to to kind of ride. But you know it's all in the name of justice.

[00:05:36] Right.

[00:05:36] So we're not we're not doing it frivolously we're not just you know exposing you know you know a whole segment about somebody because just because.

[00:05:44] Right.

[00:05:44] It's for our investigation. So there was always a motive with it. It was never just frivolous.

[00:05:50] Good. And I think you can you can tell that. As a viewer we can we can see that it's all driving toward a bigger purpose. So in the trailer you kind of touch on the pressures of living up to the success of first season when you're going into Season 2. What kept you humble and focused you know amidst the great popularity of this show.

[00:06:10] Good question. You know we just focused on our crime and kind of stuck to our Art of what we do you know where we're documentarians we're journalists so we kind of just stick to that. And yeah. And it was just it was it was a morsel of a humbling experience seeing the real humble real humble guy.

[00:06:30] Wow. Well I'm glad to see your friends friends.

[00:06:35] So did your critics influence any of your story decisions when you're thinking about your next project or moving forward.

[00:06:42] No.

[00:06:42] No. Yeah we tried to you know not let the critics influence us too much because we're terrified of the critics. They...They'll find anything to harp on. But no for our next project for Season 2 Actually we're we've looked at a lot of crimes. We had a lot of submissions from people that watch season 1. A lot of them were just more things about dicks or there was actually a vagina vandal at some school...

[00:07:09] Vagina Vandalis Virginia.

[00:07:10] Yeah.

[00:07:11] A Virginia vagina vandal?

[00:07:12] Yeah.

[00:07:13] Wow.

[00:07:13] It Would have been a good season too...But I think that's a little too.

[00:07:18] And there wasn't there wasn't...And It's not even about vaginas. It's about the crime and it wasn't...

[00:07:22] It wasn't a very interesting crime.

[00:07:24] I think in my opinion. But then there was also crazy stuff like someone asked us to investigate a murder.

[00:07:30] Oh oh yeah.

[00:07:31] An actual murder.

[00:07:32] An actual murder. Someone thought we could handle a murder. I mean we're.

[00:07:36] I mean why not?

[00:07:38] I mean yeah. But I just I don't know. I didn't want to get my hands in that...

[00:07:42] I feel like a murder would be too easy.

[00:07:43] Yeah.

[00:07:43] You know we need something like the season two premise that we have.

[00:07:49] Great. So let's let's transition to talking about season two. Now, first of all I was overjoyed to see that my fav Ming Zheng was involved in season two. and I know he was you know on camera, but he is credited with additional photography.

[00:08:05] Yeah.

[00:08:05] So exciting.

[00:08:06] Yeah yeah. He's he's actually he took a cinematography class over the summer. He's gotten really good he's been making a lot of great short doc short movies and short films and short docs and stuff like that so we thought it'd be great to have him with us and in Washington.

[00:08:21] Also it's Ming. Everyone loves Zheng.

[00:08:23] Oh yeah.

[00:08:24] It was great to have him along, a familiar face while we were in Bellevue.

[00:08:28] Oh yeah and he is such a cutie patootie. So Season 2 takes place at a brand new school, so it's not Hanover High. You're in a new school with a new crime. What was that like?

[00:08:39] Yeah. So..

[00:08:40] It was different for sure.

[00:08:42] Oh yeah it was very different. This crime took place in a Catholic school in Bellevue Washington.

[00:08:47] San Bernardin's.

[00:08:48] In St. Bernadine. And what happened was that somebody contaminated the school lemonade that everybody in the school drinks which you know made a lot of people defecate themselves pretty pretty badly. And yes.

[00:09:04] Sorry, it's not funny.

[00:09:05] It's a little bit funny.

[00:09:06] And someone was actually claiming that that they.. That they did this.

[00:09:12] They were taking credit on social media.

[00:09:14] Right by the name of the Turd Burglar.

[00:09:15] They were tagging victims. They were posting so-called evidence to their Instagram account all under an anonymous mask.

[00:09:26] Yeah. That goes by the name The Turd Burgler. They were tagging all the victims of the crimes and in photos and stuff that they've...That people had posted online.

[00:09:34] Now you said crimes. So there were multiple crimes or multiple vandalisms?

[00:09:38] Yes.

[00:09:39] Yes. This was not a one time poop joke. This was a serial poop joker.

[00:09:46] Well, a serial vandal.

[00:09:47] A serial vandal. And they're less jokes than crimes but they're slightly jokes. There was a poop piñata, a poop launcher.

[00:09:58] Wow. So just basically different modes of getting poop to many different people?

[00:10:04] And the Turd Burgler just kept striking and striking and striking. This person really... Their motive...

[00:10:12] And all the while intimidating the school or poking the bear, asking them, "try and find me!" He/ She wanted to get away with this and they thought they could buy by intimidating everyone through social media and really kind of aggravating people to try and come after them.

[00:10:28] And that was one of the most interesting things to me that sparked my interest in this crime is that this Turd Burgler was saying, "come and find me!" where usually people you know don't want to be found...But this person wanted to be discovered. So the psychology behind that and understanding what their motives are and why they would do something like this and and would want to attack the entire student body not just one person but the entire student body and to the level that they did. I mean people people went to the hospital like this was a serious and that's part of the reason why we were you know in...With the recreations that we did this time around we were pretty graphic and pretty vivid because you need to understand what these people went through.

[00:11:13] Right.

[00:11:13] Because, you know it is poop, but it's very serious and it's very dangerous too. You know the whole contamination...And you don't know if somebody was allergic to the...

[00:11:22] To poop...

[00:11:23] But to what they put in the lemonade, you know, or whatever the person put in the lemonade... You know you don't know that that could have been really bad. The Turd Burgler is lucky nobody died.

[00:11:32] Yeah poop going around is not sanitary.

[00:11:35] Yes.

[00:11:35] True. Right.

[00:11:36] That also.

[00:11:36] Right. Is that why people went to the hospital? Was it from pooping too much or?

[00:11:41] Most likely.

[00:11:41] Yes there were a lot of different cases there were people who got contaminated there were people who were affected by it directly? People who couldn't breathe. People with asthma and with all sorts of problems.

[00:11:51] People who couldn't stop pooping.

[00:11:54] Ugh.

[00:11:54] That was a big one.

[00:11:54] There was one kid...

[00:11:55] I felt so bad for that kid. Oh god.

[00:11:58] Like three or four days straight.

[00:12:00] Yeah.

[00:12:00] Oh my goodness.

[00:12:01] He drank a lot of lemonade.

[00:12:04] So how did you find this story.

[00:12:06] Submissions.

[00:12:07] Yes so Chloe Leiman. So there we have it an e-mail setup where people can submit you know crimes and leads to us. And so this story came to us.

[00:12:16] Chloe Leiman contacted us about this turd burglar and what caught me about about this crime and about about her story out of all the other submissions we got was was the fact that she was best friends with with with Kevin McLean who was expelled for the crimes. And she was saying that he didn't do it and I'm not going to give too much away but with what she said to me it really rang true to me. And then so when I contacted her back and I got a bunch more information on the crime and everything that happened and she sent me all this archival footage and it was pretty clear to me that we had something we had something here. So we headed out to Bellevue.

[00:12:59] So why did the school think that Kevin McLean did this?

[00:13:03] Well first off they were under a lot of pressure from the school board, the parents, the community. The community everyone to find out who did this. And when they didn't have any leads and they didn't have you know anywhere to go, they just went with whatever fit. And if it didn't fit then they tried to make it fit.

[00:13:23] And that's that's what happened with Kevin. He actually confessed.

[00:13:27] He confessed?

[00:13:28] Yeah he confessed. But and that's the thing is one in four people who are exonerated by DNA evidence were convicted on a confession. So false confessions are very common. So yes so he was he had given a confession and just like Sam just said, the school board was really under a lot of heat and a lot of pressure from everybody to name a...to name a vandal and to put an end to this because the school is a very high profile school with you know amazing basketball team and you know a great education. They have a really big name. So this really was tainting their reputation. And you know could possibly you know you know if people could you know remove funding from the school which would be big deal to them.

[00:14:13] Right.

[00:14:13] Take their kids out.

[00:14:14] Yeah exactly. So they were under a lot of pressure to find who this vandal was and eventually sneaked one out of Kevin McClain, at least from our opinion.

[00:14:25] Wow. So was Kevin MacLean kind of like a Dillan from Season 1? You know like a class clown and mischievous?

[00:14:33] In certain aspects just in the way that you know the school board sort of pegged him into a hole to you know meet what they needed for...To expel him or to you know get him in trouble but not any other ways, no. Kevin was not like a class clown. He didn't goof around a lot. You know he he pretended to be smarter than he really was and he put on you know a big show. He's a little odd. I'll say that. But other than that he's a sweet kid and they really sort of just kind of dug him into a hole.

[00:15:11] So he had no beef with the administration? Nothing?

[00:15:13] None whatsoever.

[00:15:14] Wow.

[00:15:14] And that's also part of the thing that's so scary is that anyone is vulnerable to the justice system. And that's another thing that I've learned with you know...Been making documentaries. Me and Sam especially picked up on is that everybody has a motive and everyone is trying to save their butts and throw other people under the rug to save themselves. And that's part of the reason why we believe what happened with Kevin is that you know the police didn't want to you know get in you know that they didn't want people to pull money from the school and the police were under pressure. They had motives.

[00:15:47] Right.

[00:15:47] So you're going to have to look at everybody and remain biased with solving crimes.

[00:15:51] Right. Now especially in the first episode. There are a lot of shots of fecal matter. It's just you know poop on poop on poop. So how many meetings did you have or what was the discussion there on where to pull back? How much poop is too much poop?

[00:16:07] See, I fought for the poop.

[00:16:09] Yeah.

[00:16:10] Because, one, poop is funny.

[00:16:12] Oh yeah.

[00:16:12] And two, you've got to really understand the severity of these crimes. I mean, if it makes you a little sick to look at it, imagine what these people went through experiencing it.

[00:16:23] Right. So it's almost making everyone more empathetic to what's going on.

[00:16:28] Yeah you gotta...

[00:16:28] I felt that we'd be doing it a disservice by kind of censoring it.

[00:16:33] And you have some recreations of some of the...

[00:16:36] Yeah.

[00:16:37] You know it's just explosions of poop that happened in this docu series. What did they use to recreate the actual fecal matter.

[00:16:46] I think Ming actually came up with that.

[00:16:48] Yeah. Ming came up with a concoction that was very realistic.

[00:16:52] Ugh. Ming.

[00:16:52] Wasn't it soy based?

[00:16:53] It was. It was soy based...

[00:16:55] Or clay.

[00:16:56] Chocolate something. I believe it was edible actually.

[00:17:00] Wow, so ming not only did additional photography but he also created props.

[00:17:05] Our special effects team was having a little bit of trouble with that.

[00:17:07] Along with...Now that season two is owned like owned by Netflix and they are really helping us out here, they did a lot of the stuff with the recreations once we you know put our cut together. They wanted to add an extra touch. And I think they did a really good job.

[00:17:22] Wow,

[00:17:22] Oh it was beautiful. Our director of photography...It was actually the first time we'd ever been on a real set because we're always you know in the field you know interviewing people and in our board room and stuff like that.

[00:17:32] Usually, it's just us two and camera.

[00:17:32] Right.

[00:17:33] So this time we had a lot more.

[00:17:35] Our whole crew...Was it was really cool. So thanks Netflix.

[00:17:39] Thanks, Netflix. And thank you, Ming.

[00:17:40] Thank you Ming.

[00:17:41] But it was...It Was beautiful the way our Director of Photography executed that. It was... The shots are just oh my god. Stunning.

[00:17:48] I mean it is gorgeous... Especially those shots..

[00:17:50] Even the ones about poop.

[00:17:51] Yes.

[00:17:52] We'll they're all about poop.

[00:17:53] Yeah but like the ones, like specifically, it's like it's like...ew... And also like wow.

[00:17:57] It's so artfully done.

[00:17:59] Yeah.

[00:17:59] Yeah we did it with good taste.

[00:18:02] Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Never thought I'd say that about poop but what can I say. The poop in this is gorgeous. At what point during production on this did you think, (And pardon the term) "Oh Shit. You know I think we really have something here?"

[00:18:15] You know it was different because with our first crime we didn't really have much to start with although we didn't know everybody at the school. There wasn't. You know when we when we came into our second crime there was all this archival footage and all this stuff. So that was really when we said like oh shit there's there there's something here.

[00:18:35] And it was really exciting to see that archival footage. You know it was all sort of there for us and we had to play a little bit of catch up and it was a fun challenge but it felt nice to sort of have the facts laid out in front of us already to build off of.

[00:18:48] Or so we thought.

[00:18:49] So we thought.

[00:18:50] Right.

[00:18:50] And that's when I was like, oh shit.

[00:18:52] Yeah.

[00:18:53] There it is. Now, DaMarcus Tillman...

[00:18:57] Yes.

[00:18:57] Big name in college basketball. I mean he was kind of a player in this whole...

[00:19:03] He was a big part of this.

[00:19:04] Yeah I don't really want to get too much into into this. You know I just want you to watch it. But yeah he was. He's he's a star. He is the star of St. Bernadine Catholic high school. He's an amazing athlete and everyone loves him and yeah he's really popular and he has you know he has something to do with the crime. So I just leave it at that I don't want to give too much away.

[00:19:25] Great. Well I guess we can just leave it at: Watch it.

[00:19:28] Watch it.

[00:19:30] Yeah, please.

[00:19:30] Or don't. We don't care.

[00:19:31] Sam!

[00:19:32] No I'm joking. We care. Please watch.

[00:19:34] Please watch.

[00:19:35] If nothing else, for Ming Zheng's additional photography.

[00:19:37] If you want in Season 3.

[00:19:39] Please watch.

[00:19:40] Or at least put it on Netflix thinks you're watching it.

[00:19:42] Right. There you go. You don't even have to watch it. Just let it play.

[00:19:45] Please watch it.

[00:19:46] No. Please watch it.

[00:19:48] Please. OK.

[00:19:48] Did we mention that we want you to watch it?

[00:19:53] Now without giving too much away about the ending, I wanted to ask you both about your relationship with social media. How has it changed since finishing this docu series.

[00:20:02] Well yeah. It's the way I view social media is completely different now. I mean at least personally for me I don't know about you yet.

[00:20:08] I mean, yeah. I've I've never been a huge fan of social media but yeah I would agree. My view has really been solidified now.

[00:20:16] Yeah I think you know I think it just...We all pretend to be you know things that we're not and put on you know put on almost a shell of protection.

[00:20:26] Right.

[00:20:27] You know on social media we show people where we want them to see. So I think it's you know I'm trying to be a little bit more honest now on social media posts. You know you know posting a good photo and not just you know. Yeah.

[00:20:40] So that photo from the American Vanda red carpet was just just a good photo...But wasn't...like.

[00:20:47] That's honest.

[00:20:48] ...You weren't like flashing a little bit.

[00:20:49] No I mean...

[00:20:50] Flexing a little?

[00:20:50] I was proud. We had been you know we're two kids and we worked really hard. And here we are at our first premiere for our docu series. Yeah that was a really honest moment.

[00:21:02] Yeah. Yeah I posted it because it was cool.

[00:21:04] You posted photos too!

[00:21:06] Yeah. Because it...I wasn't... I wasn't being honest. I was like, "Yeah look, this is sick!" At least I'm honest about it.

[00:21:13] OK it was a little it was a little bit of a showing off.

[00:21:16] And there we go.

[00:21:17] That's OK. You've earned it and I'm sure you both looked cute as Kim B. Oh Katie pies. Well I think that's it. It's been an honor to have you two in the studio.

[00:21:27] Thank you so much.

[00:21:27] And again we just want to remind everyone to watch season two and can't wait to see what you guys do next.

[00:21:32] Thanks so much.

[00:21:33] Thank you.

[00:21:38] That was Lauren Lopez with Sam Ecklund and Peter Maldonado. And now let's hear from you. Here's some of the best social media reactions to Season 2 of American Vandal.

[00:21:48] @adefia04 suggests, "If you've got a Netflix account and you're down for sheer tomfoolery, do yourself a favor, and watch American vandal." This one is from @loudmouthjulia, "Tip, if you report slash write slash think about the correlation between technology the Internet social media and pop culture, you absolutely need to watch American Vandal this Friday." @TheCainBrolanPonders, "I spent all night thinking about it and American Vandal really missed their opportunity to release season 2 on a SaTURDday."

[00:22:33] Before we let you go. We've got one more treat for you. It's time for "what you watchin'," the segment where we find out what the people in the episode are watching on Netflix. Here are Lauren, Peter and Sam.

[00:22:45] I'm watching Wild, Wild Country. I'm a huge fan and I actually would love to. Hopefully one day we could partner with the team who made that and maybe make something together, I would...

[00:22:54] That would be the dream team.

[00:22:55] Oh my god I'm obsessed. Well, Sarah Canig is the dream, always will be...

[00:23:00] Of course.

[00:23:00] But Wild, Wild, Country is Amazing. Highly recommend it.

[00:23:03] I just watched Ironfist which was good. Other than that, I've been watching a lot of movies. The Godzilla movies they have are pretty cool. Blame. A lot of like anime shows actually. Netflix has really good animation stuff.

[00:23:19] Very cool. I've been watching Big Mouth, the cartoon.

[00:23:23] Another great animation show.

[00:23:24] Yeah, It is very sensual, which I enjoy.

[00:23:27] Yeah, Definitely Big Mouth.

[00:23:32] And that's it for this special episode. Next week we'll be back with our regularly scheduled programming. We'll be talking about the new original film, The Angel.
